Fernand Petzl, an avid caver in the 1930's developed new methods for the sport. With the help of friend Pierre Chevalier, developed techniques using ropes instead of ladders which gained them world records in caving. From here Petzl developed the ascender and later the descender, important tools in caving and climbing. Petzl today still stand at forefront of technology, developing and perfecting new equipment for climbing, mountaineering and caving.
