AVON DESCENT SAFETY SKILLS ASSESSMENT
These assessment classes will be held on the following dates:
- 26th June
- 3rd July
- 11th July
- 17th July
- 25th July
- 1st & 2nd Aug
Cost: $40
Where: We will be meeting at the lower end of Bells Rapids, entrance off Cathedral Ave - Brigadoon, off Great Eastern Hwy, at the river bank opposite the toilet block.

A prerequisite for most first time competitors in the Avon Descent, this session includes a briefing on all aspects of safety and risk awareness of the white water environment. This can also be incorporated in all white water trips run by Mainpeak for the Avon Descent. It is very important that you understand that this is an assessment and not an instructional session.
Whats involved in the competency test:
- demonstrate defensive swimming techniques;
- identify the potential hazards when swimming in moving water;
- adopt the correct body position to minimise injury following craft capsize;
- demonstrate aggressive swimming techniques;
- demonstrate the ability to set a ferry angle in order to reach the bank or eddy;
- demonstrate breaking in and out of eddies in order to get to shore;
- identify and demonstrate techniques to actively free oneself from river hazards in simulations;
- demonstrate the ability to wade across a current of mid-thigh depth, alone and using support, in order to self rescue;
- demonstrate craft re-entry;
- identify a variety of different re-entry techniques;
- select a method of re-entry after consideration of physical ability, type of craft and situational variances.
Equipment required:
- Helmet
- PFD
- Avon Descent Race craft, with hand loops fitted (Deck if in a Kayak, if racing in a double you have to use the kayak which you will be racing in)
- Booties
- Paddle
- Warm paddling clothing (this may include: thermals - top and bottom, long wetsuit type pants and top, cag, gloves)
- Change of clothes
- Thermos of warm drink to get you back feeling human again after the assessment

AVON WHITE WATER TRAINING COURSES
Walyunga– Upper Swan Ti-trees
When: Sunday 4th & 25th July
Meet: Amiens Crescent at 8:00am
Cost: $95
Prerequisites: Flat Water Skills Course or a Assessment.
Essential to those just getting into white water or fine tuning your skills, this is a safe place to learn river running skills with a wide variety of white water features available to practice on. Includes various rapids and t-tree sections including Waylunga chute and Bells rapids continues on through to the Upper Swan Ti Trees.
Day One Ti-trees ( to Posselts Ford )
When: Wednesday 14th July & Saturday 24th July
Meet: Posselts Ford at 8:30am
Cost: $130
Prerequisites: Flat Water Skills Course or a Assessment.
This run is an ideal view of the Ti-trees at the end of day one and start of day two. Critical experience for those who have never done the Avon Descent and is the most technically difficult section of day one, this includes some rapids from day 2.
Posselts Ford to Walyunga
When: Saturday 10th & 31stJuly & Sunday 18th July
Meet: Walyunga NP Gate at 6am
Cost: $130
Prerequisites: Flat Water Skills Course or aCompetency/Assessment.Bells Skills development day or the Walyunga to Upper swan Ti Trees Paddle.
Starting at Posselts Ford, the Avon valley includes numerous challenging rapids and is a long hard day in training. The trip requires all novice participants to have completed either the Bells Skills development day or the Walyunga to Upper swan Ti Trees Paddle. This is an essential part of your training, join Mainpeak and let us take care of your transport requirements.
Upper Swan Ti Trees
When: Sunday June 27 & 3rd, 11th and 17th of July
Meet: Amiens Crescent at 8:00am
Cost: $95
Prerequisites: Flat Water Skills Course or a Assessment.
This is a great first up taste of the Avon river, good to get warmed up for the season and can be run at low river levels.

Introduction to Kayaking
If you are new to kayaking and want to learn the basics then enroll in this course.
The aim of this two and half hour lesson is to impart knowledge. You will have a basic understanding of
- paddling forward and backwards
- an emergency stop
- the ability of turning the boat with a combination of forward and reverse sweeps
- how to launch your craft
- how to embark and disembark
After the lesson you will have the confidence to conduct a deep water capsize, wet exit, conduct a self and assisted rescue. Please note that you are required to bring your own paddling gear.
Cost: $65.00 for both mainpeak Club members and non-members.

Paddlecraft Demos/Demo Days
Come and try a canoe or kayak at our demo days every Saturday at Freshwater Bay.
If you are interested in trying any of the wide range of the world's best brands of paddle craft that Mainpeak Paddlesports have to offer, then give the team a call and book on for a demo. We can bring several craft that you are interested in and give you a trial run in each. Mainpeak Paddlesports staff will be on hand to offer advice on which craft is best suited for your needs. If it’s the latest in fishing kayaks, a sit on top for the kids, canoes or any other paddlecraft, Mainpeak Paddlesports can bring it down to Freshwater Bay and help you select the right craft.
As a bonus, Mainpeak Paddlesports offers a FREE $65 lesson with every boat purchase of over $1000.

Kayak Rolling Lessons
Learn how to roll a kayak in the controlled environment of a swimming pool, so you can be confident once you get into white water. These classes are run with a 2:1 student to instructor ratio to ensure you get the maximum attention required. Minimum of two people required for the class to go ahead.
