Steve Jones

My Background

After retiring from the Security Industry in 1996 Steve decided it was time to pursue the activities that he enjoyed doing the most. He was introduced to kayaking four years ago and can now be found using one of three kayaks he owns on the ocean or river most weekends. With previous experience in wave ski and scuba, and multiple long distance kayak expeditions under his belt, Steve says of kayaking "I enjoy the sense of freedom and adventure that I get as no two days are the same."

Kayak Carrying Solution

Posted by Steve Jones, on May 17 2013

No more carrying your kayak to the water then having to go backwards and forwards for your gear and you can’t park close to the water, just strap the kayak to the trolley load it up and away you go. An ideal transport solution that is light, collapsible and with pneumatic tyres gives a smooth ride on rough ground. The quick and easy removal of the wheels allow for storage inside the large deck hatch of my kayaks. Great back and time saving product.

The Mantras combination of padding around the ankle and on the tongue, a Vibram flexible sole for stability and grip GORE-TEX for climate control and the waterproof soft leather upper make them a great pair of shoes for the comfort minded hiker that wants a low cut shoe. As tough as a boot with the comfort of a runner My first pair were used as work shoes climbing on roofs and lasted for years.

While playing in the off shore white water, I know I am going to get wiped out or hit by a wave at sometime and chances are my head is going to come in contact with something hard so wearing a Predator Helmet has saved me a few headaches. I like the full ear protection and it doesn’t obscure my hearing to any great degree. The ventilation/drainage holes help keep my head cool on hot days and let the water out quickly if I end up upside down. The adjustable padding and snug fit make it comfortable to wear. Wouldn’t go in the white water without one.

What a great way to go fishing no fumes, no noise, just you and the ocean. The Pescador Angler 12 is a very comfortable platform to go tackle the big ones. The large cockpit area has plenty of workspace and is easy to get in and out of, the large bow hatch has plenty of storage room to keep things dry, while 2 day hatches provide easy access for the things you need right away. All you need is tackle and bait and away you go.

There’s nothing worse than being hit by a wave while paddling off shore and getting a kayak full of water, that’s where the Harmony Hi Volume Bilge Pump is your best friend. Its light, easy to use and will pump out about 5 litres of water with about 10 strokes. If you drop it over the side it will float and the synthetic construction means no corrosion. The short length makes it easy to stow in even in tight recesses of cockpit

No more bulky pots and pans to carry. The X-Pot is an amazing piece of cooking equipment, the hard aluminium base allows a fast cooking/boiling time while the tall silicone sides are excellent for stirring and the ribbed handles give a good grip when lifting. Fully collapsible it goes great with my 3 piece X-Set. Thank you Sea to Summit

Space Conscious I like to travel light when I am out and about so the Sea to Summit X-Set is a great way to save space when packing , at 364g the light weight and storage pouch keep it small and organized. All items have a stable rigid base and flexible ribbed side and can be used for hot as well as cold food and drinks. I use silicone for cooking at home so why not while out camping.

What a great pair of boots these are. The air cushioned midsole, Ortholite foam foot bed and breathable mesh lining make them very comfortable to wear even on demanding terrain. The waterproof leather and mesh upper and the Gore-Tex lining protects your feet as well as keeping them dry and the bellows style tongue keeps the debris and grass seeds out. Great pair of hiking boots.

Its hard to write a review on something you haven’t used and never want to be in a position where you do have to, but as I am quite often kayaking, by myself I carry one of these with me on offshore trips or inland rivers. I keep it in my 4WD when going off road and on bushwalking and mountain bike trips. This may seem excessive to some people but I value my safety. As these are worldwide operational and registered to one owner it makes them a great piece of travel equipment if you are heading out the back of beyond on some amazing adventure. I hope I am never in a position to use mine but, you have to think “what is my life worth”

If you are like me and still go kayaking when it’s cold and windy or if you just like playing in the waves off shore, the Swell Neoprene Skirt is just what you need to keep you warm and dry while you are having fun. The Neoprene deck is capable of taking a direct wave hit without collapsing and the woven nylon tunnel with adjustable braces allows plenty of movement and security from the elements. So don’t worry about the cold and fog or possibly getting wet, get one of these Neoprene skirts and get out there.

I’m usually a sit in paddler but its awkward carrying fishing gear so decided to give the Tarpon 140 a go. I mainly paddle offshore and found the stability and the way it rides over the waves pretty amazing. The bow sits high and was able to cut through the waves and surf with ease. Even punching through the bigger surf wasn't a problem. The rudder is great to keep you on a straight line when the wind starts throwing you around. The bow and centre hatches provide ample packing space for those overnight kayak/camping trips and there is plenty of space for other gear, I can even fit my scuba gear in the rear deck opening when I go to the offshore reefs. The Gear Track system allows for fitting various accessories without drilling holes and don’t forget the drinks holder. The adjustable rudder controls and the super comfortable Phase 3 Airpro Seat make this a perfect platform for heading out and enjoying fishing or just paddling around.

After paddling a Perception for years I thought it was about time to try a W/S Tsunami 145. I was pleased by the way it handled combining the stability of a recreational kayak with the speed and tracking of a touring model. There is ample storage space for those day trips or even short expedition camping trips. The up-swept nose gives the Tsunami the ability to cut through waves and the solid construction can withstand bumping the odd rock or log with minimal damage. The Phase 3 Air Pro Tour seat is very comfortable and the larger cockpit has plenty of room. All round, a great Kayak.

Described, as a Lightweight multifunction shoe for fitness trail running and outdoor activities is an understatement. These shoes are all they say they are, I have abused them and they still look like new. I use them mountain biking, hiking and they go for a walk most mornings, they have been covered in mud, sand, red dust and whatever else I have stood in and all I do is hose and brush them off. The Gore-Tex lining keeps my feet dry and the microtex lining keeps the sweat away. A great pair of shoes for anything outdoors.

This is an amazingly high performance paddle made with a full carbon blade and shaft, light enough for those long distance trips or even short trips, but strong enough not to break easily, the slightly larger blade adds more power and acceleration to your stroke without any flutter. The oval shaft and ergonomic design make this a great touring paddle wether used at a low or high angle stroke and the large face of the blade makes it easier to roll sit ins and maneuver heavier sit ons.

This is definitely comfort for when I am going to be in the same place for a while at one of my favourite camping grounds. You don't feel the cold from the ground and the description of soft and sinfully comfortable sure is right. They roll up to about 150mm diameter and weight next to nothing making them easy to pack and store. These mats are what comfort camping is about.

My Exped mat has had quite a lot of use on kayak trips up the coast camping on sand, grass and all sorts of ground and not once have I noticed the cold or woke up with any aches. Its size and weight make it ideal for backpacking or where space is a concern. The dual flat valves make it easy to inflate and deflate and there is no chance of coming undone in the night. It's even great if you just want a bit of extra padding at the beach or picnic.

It is bright enough to cook by and can be has a dimmer switch for softer lighting. Stand it up or hang it up the 4AA batteries will provide ample lighting or it can be fitted with a rechargeable battery pack. I have used mine extensively on kayak/camping trips and wouldn't use anything else.

Yes this top really keeps you warm when you are out for a paddle on an icy cold morning. It is as it claims to be, 100% windproof and and amazingly comfortable. The sleeves are thinner than the back and shoulders allowing plenty of movement while paddling but still keep you warm. The zip allows you to let in some cool air if you get too warm. Just the thing for the Avon Descent.

When you're out the back of beyond and your batteries fade the Powermonkey will keep your gadgets and devices alive. It saves carrying a lot of spare batteries for different pieces of equipment (cameras, phones, GPS) as the very efficient solar panel will charge during the day and Powermonkey will carry on charging your equipment when the sun goes down. I use mine regularly while hiking and kayaking so that my camera will always have power for that unexpected shot. A great gadget for the great outdoors.

After using another brand of PFD for a number of years I changed to the Astral vest and noticed the difference straight away. It is very light and comfortable and the mesh back makes it a lot easier to wear as well as providing noticeable cooling. The lack of bulk allows freedom of movement to the point you don't notice you are wearing it. The mesh pocket is easy to open with one hand and along with the small inside pocket, allows you to carry necessary items. Overall a PFD for anyone who wants a vest that is cool and comfortable.

The Carolina 12's performance, acceleration and speed along with smooth lines make it a very stable true tracking kayak that will turn easily whenever you want it to. The size makes it a very versatile kayak allowing you to get to where the big guys can't and still have fun in white water, surf or just cruising on a flat ocean somewhere.
