My Background

Kiefer started running seven years ago to increase soccer fitness but soon found trail running to be one of the more challenging and enjoyable ways to immerse himself in the pristine wilderness of his local Torndirup National Park. Kiefer describes his addiction as 'a raw sport; just you, your opposition and nature. Without the external distractions of a busy modern world.'

These pants are hardcore. Zero stretch, canvas feel, and still light weight. if you are looking for a hard wearing pant these will do the job. tonnes of pockets for multitools and misc items, plus they actually have some decent length to the leg(which i like). My only issue is they are a touch warm when you start working, but that's the case with most canvas pants.

It is a big claim from Klean Kanteen to state that this bottle will keep a drink cold for 24 hours, and as of yet I’ve only been able to leave the bottle in a hot car for 12 hours, but even after that heat (31 degree day) the contents were still ice cold. These bottles aren't the lightest in the world, but the weight is a minor after thought when you acknowledge the quality of the design. The wide mouth construction is versatile when hiking or you can use smaller spouts around the city.

If the answer is yes then you should definitely consider getting a pair of these hiking shorts. Like the Montane Terra Pant these shorts are lightweight and breathable, yet these beauties have avoided one of the common Montane pitfalls of fitting an entire size small. To that extent you have a comfortable, quick drying, manoeuvrable, sun proof short that is durable enough for any condition you are going to be taking a pair of shorts into

Yeah, I know the title was long winded (ba dum tsk), but for serious wind protection on brisk mornings this jacket is always what I reach for first. This jacket has a fantastic windproofing in strong winds, yet is so light and compressible that if you do ever need to remove it you can roll it into your fist and shove it in your pocket. Now I personally do not feel the effects of the cold to greatly, however windproofing has always been a relatively high priority to me as it can sap your energy incredibly quickly. Luckily the featherlite is true to its name and has barely any mass whatsoever, so you build barely any heat wearing it. One thing I do have to say about it is it is a small fit, so if you are going to grab one and like a little room for movement grab the size up. If not go true to size and have it relatively skin tight. The jacket also has a decent amount of stretch so don't fret about your manoeuvrability in it.

Montane have put a lot of thought into this garment. By combining the Primaloft and merino fibres this garment has fantastic warmth and thermoregulation, which is surprising given how light it is. The real joy of the garment is the fit. Personally I would have preferred going a size up, but my true to size large worked very well as a slim fit, and offered no restriction through movement due to the mild stretch the shirt has. This is also helped by offset flatlock stitching in the sleeves. To surmise this shirt is comfortable and breathable, and I have found it to be versatile enough to handle any activity. Definitely worth your time!!

I find wheeled bags normally have a substantial weight, which can be a pretty huge drawback when travelling. that to say, you don't want to go to light as the durability is lacking. The double deck from Burton walks the fine line between the two with confidence. I have found that this bag can take all of my (sensible) luggage requirements, and can suffice for multiple months of use at a time.

Posted by Kiefer Wyllie, on June 25 2015

The Trekker Lite II is a bit of an odd boot for me. This is mainly due to the fact the main boot I have used for the last year+ is a super stiff leather boot, so I have become accustomed to hauling hard wearing, heavy boots around on my feet. The trekker lite is, as its name would suggest, light. This, however, is not a bad thing, as the shoe itself still has plenty of rigidity through the outsole, and the heavily rubberised toe rand provides plenty of protection. One thing I noticed was the fit of the boot was a little wider around the heel than I was accustomed to and the arch support wasn’t highly pronounced. I found that this was easily fixed with a pair of green Super Feet. All in all the shoe is highly breathable, waterproof and has plenty of grip throughout the outsole making it a perfect year-round boot. If you, like me, feel better in slightly more aggressive boots though, you may wish to look at the AKU SuperAlps.

Deep Winter Comfort

Posted by Kiefer Wyllie, on April 23 2015

OK, this jacket is fantastic for wind protection and water repellency, yet to wear this as a running shell you need to meet certain criteria. Firstly, you must really, REALLY feel the cold; secondly, you must run in winter. Although it is highly breathable this jacket is more similar to a softshell than a light running piece and because of that I give it 4 stars. That put to one side though this particular jacket is incredibly comfortable, even purely as a day to day soft shell. Features that personally make this jacket special are the overly extended cuffs with thumb holes which is comfortable regardless of how you are wearing the sleeves. The jacket also has a high neck that holds its position and doesn't flap about in the wind, whilst having the capacity to have the hood roll away, and the chest pocket being the perfect size to double as a media pocket. One thing to note size wise is that although this does fit true to size (I normally wear a large and it works perfectly) the fit on this is rather slim, so if you prefer some extra breathing room you might want to go up a size.

OK, so i have had this on the go for over a year and i can say with absolute certainty that i am converted from wearing 'packs' running. Running vests offer a far greater range of movement as they are moving in unison with your ribcage, however because they are elasticised they do not restrict breathing to any extent. The Jaws, along with the Fang are the lightest vests i have tried due to the construction being almost exclusively mesh and an ultrasil style fabric called raptor Hydroseal. probable my only complaint is that the bottles are not the most easily used, and i find they are in an awkward position but these are easy enough to remove and replace with a bladder. Definitely worth a try.

Ok, so the Moab is a shoe that has been around for a while, but it easily remains up there with the best lightweight hiking shoes, and has spawned every possibly variation on its construction. due to the low density EVA running throughout you have instantaneous comfort with this model, and the last fits quite a large range of feet, so it is pretty universal there. My main complaint(if you can call it that) is that it is a very soft flexing shoe, which means my feet were feeling the pressure the trails would put on them after a few days. I wouldn't use it as a long duration shoe, but there are many people who love it for that purpose.

OK, so that's a lie. Head torches are limited to providing light, and does this ever provide light. 160 Lumen output and multiple settings are good in theory, however some torches fall flat on what they promise, so i am pleased to say that when using this model for hiking, running(trail and road) or just around the farm at night it has exceeded expectations, both with the central spots power, and the wide beams clarity. Weather has never been an issue either due to a rubberised seal providing waterproofing, though I've not tested this model as far as submersion. The Main qualm most people see looking at the specs is the weight of the model, but I've not found this to be problematic, even in the bounce inducing sport of trail running. DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED!

First things first, this is DEFINITELY a colder weather pant. If you are hiking in the middle of summer, and want something light and breathable this is not for you. I've had nothing but luck with the Super Terra as a climbing pant, for shorter hikes (it's been a hot summer over here in WA) and for intense laborious farm work. Posted by Kiefer Wyllie, on December 2 2013

Not to be used under your finest dinner coat (along with your top hat and monocle) this style of vest gives fantastic performance on the trail. This for the most part is due to the shorter profile on the torso, elasticised around your ribcage, which allows for far less restriction as it moves in absolute unison with your upper body, whilst not restricting your breathing. As far as performance is concerned, I’ve not had a more comfortable running pack and the fact that the storage options for gels and flexi flasks are so plentiful and accessible it is hard to go wrong. Obviously it is a touch more expensive than standard hydration packs, however once you’ve tried it on and taken it for a run you will easily see why. I’ve been converted to running with vests for a while and this pack only increases my certainty in the decision.

OK, so technically these are hiking pants, and I have to say that is primarily what I use them for, however last week I was down in Albany having a bit of a wander when I decided it'd be a good idea to run the bald head trail. 16km return along a sea spine with mid to high technicality plus a lot of thorn bushes. FUN!!! Upon getting to the trail I realised I had left all of my shorts in Perth, but I had committed to the run so I headed out in these. The ventilation, breathability, articulation and reinforcing combined perfectly to provide protection from the trail, while not hindering performance. The knees worked particularly well which I found out when I was suddenly introduced to the ground. I would get a size up from what you'd normally wear. Montane sizes are a bit tricky. You have to be pretty mad to trail run. honestly though, hurtling down highly technical terrain should not be something that sounds fun. personally i am a little mad, because there are few things that are more fun. i've been testing this shoe with high expectations after previously owning the XT 4 S-Lab, and i have to say this one hasn't missed a beat. great comfort and stability for heel planters, a relatively low drop so you can use it with minimalist style forefoot technique, lightweight enough so it feels comfortable after 40+km, yet also enough mass so you will actually feel comfort after that point. over all i'd have to say it is my favourite trail shoe. 5 out of 5 blister free toes.

I have has this jacket for a little while now, however it has only recently been given a thorough using, due to Perth’s rather inclement weather of late. The robust highly water repellent exterior is more than you need for the city when it's raining prolifically, yet the interior is really where this jacket excels. It’s lined with a Sherpa fleece style fabric through the main body and hood, which heats up to the perfect temperature 10 seconds after you've put it on. This jacket can be used for bush walking easily and I look forward to testing it further in those conditions, but for the moment it is easily my favourite casual jacket.

Posted by Kiefer Wyllie, on January 6 2014

I've had a few S-Lab items over my time at Mainpeak and I can honestly say I’ve never been disappointed with a single item. This one is probably the most unique of my present trail shoes due to a few main features being the tread, super dense mesh upper and the Endofit mid foot. Given the profile of this shoe it is best suited for those who like to run on their fore-feet, so it is not for everyone but if you do fall into this demographic I highly recommend it. The lugs are slightly deeper than the speedcross with a denser rubber composite, so for anything from mud to pea-gravel you are going to grip INSANELY WELL. The upper is built for these scrappy conditions too as with the race last and the dense mesh you get grade a response without having any debris uptake. With all this said though I have to say my favourite part of the shoe is the elasticized mid foot (endofit) which combines with Salomon’s normal foot wrapping prowess to create incredible hold. Overall an incredible shoe that can handle the worst trail conditions

Every feature about it just works perfectly, from its slightly relaxed slim fit which allows a great deal of air circulation (aiding the highly breathable mesh), zero chafe, excellent wicking ability and the aerodynamics of it. The later might be a placebo effect but I felt like I was getting less wind resistance, ergo a faster more streamlined run. I am yet to compete in these shoes, however from multiple training sessions I can say a few things about this shoe. 1. DAMN does this shoe grip well. The deep lugs on the base are specific for mud and snow, but using them on pea gravel I have never felt so sure in my footing. 2. This shoe has a 'race last' meaning it is slightly narrow. This doesn't make it uncomfortable at all, but it does give a snug fit which prevents your forefoot from moving medially or laterally through quick movements. It has a slight heel to it (11mm drop I believe) but that in no way hinders barefoot technique, merely aiding people who aren't yet accustomed to that style. Overall a top notch shoe, I cannot wait to test it further.

Ok, so I have had these shoes for about 4 months now, in which time I have well and truly put them through the ringer. Personally I am very impressed with how the shoe has help up over this time period, as with most lightweight minimal shoes like this they have a relatively short life span. Not this shoe however, which is still in great shape. The chevron "VA" lugs on the forefoot are starting to wear (with this shoe if you are doing greater distances you need to run on your forefoot or mid-foot) but that is to be expected. The surprising thing is that the Morphodynamic sole is still offering great rebound. Normally on shoes with this profile I have used before the urethane becomes compressed and non-responsive but not this model which is quite amazing. Great shoe for the forefoot runner.

As a super minimal shoe they give excellent feel for the terrain you are on, whilst also providing a decent amount of support. A favourite aspect to these shoes is the lacing system that is both connected to the sole through PU webbing and to the tongue via the yellow fabric webbing you can see. This combines brilliantly to lock your foot in place. The Vibram sole is also holding up well with little wear considering what I have put them through. The summer months are still a way away, but when they arrive it can get ludicrously hot. I have had a pair of these in my shoe collection for just over a year now and they were close to the only shoe i wore all summer. Whether it's hiking, running, paddling or just using casually these over-built sandals do it all. The fit is also unique as it is one continuous strap which runs through the shoe. Because of this you can make it fit your contours correctly. As for comfort under foot this sandal is second to none in my opinion.

Function meets style

First thing, this jacket is neither fully windproof nor waterproof, however when I wear this it truly does not matter, you could say I've 'bonded' with it (sorry, I'll stop making puns and get back to reviewing). I can wear this for a decent half hour in rain without feeling wet and I'd say for wind proofing it is pretty close to being there. This is great for casual use and also technical use when it starts getting colder. This makes a great jacket post morning run, or an option for walking the dog at night when the frosty air sucks the warmth from your core. A fantastic addition to an outdoor wardrobe.

The Ultimate Short

I have only had these for about a week, however I am incredibly chuffed about their performance in every facet I have tested them in. Even though they are casual/board shorts I have run12km in them without any detriment, climbed at Blackwall reach, swam and skateboarded around Fremantle all in the one day. They are very quick drying and their claim of 'no chafe' is valid so far. As for the DWR coating this past Wednesday i was wearing these and a Burton soft-shell in a heavy rain storm and can confidently say that it works. By far the best pair of shorts i have bought in a long time.

Merrell are onto something here

I am definitely not an avid forefoot runner; however I do see its merit and try to incorporate it as much as possible into my running as it does really help my technique and speed. To me the Merrell barefoot shoes provide one of the most forefoot conducive runs I have experienced. In comparison to the previous Merrell model you can feel the improvements, it is a really good feeling when companies actually improve product due to customer feedback. Anyway, super responsive, decent support whilst also being entirely minimal, fantastic on hard pack/road/mild trail and a decent improvement on durability to the old models. I loved the old trail gloves, but these are a far more complete shoe.

The name says it all!

So technically not trail running, however this jacket is by far the warmest I have used! Absolutely fantastic for post morning run when it's important that you do not get cold too quickly, and great at coaxing you out of bed when it is 3 degrees outside. It is toasty warm in next to no time after you have put it on, plus it has barely any weight so you don't even feel like you are wearing a jacket most of the time. I honestly cannot fault Montane on this fantastic garment.

Maximising Minimalism

Firstly I was surprised how light this shoe is, particularly on foot. This leads you to thinking 1. 'Wow I feel agile' 2. '....but if I hit a rock my foot will be crushed'. I was quite tentative taking these over the first 20km run, however this niggling thought was completely unjustified. For a shoe with literally no mass, the thought from the designers truly shines. The PU bands that run from the sole to the eyelets combined with the internal sock like lining hold the mid-foot perfectly, allowing a smooth ride. The thin base also provides much more cushioning than one would expect looking at the shoe. La Sportiva’s Morphodynamic sole provides one of the most cushioned soles I have run in; however with the thickness of it you still have a great feel for the trail. So far I have felt no hot-spots in this shoe and it has become a personal favourite for quick sprint ascents.

OK, so far I have put approximately 75km (three 25 km runs) in these shoes and I have to say I am very impressed. The weight of the shoe is by no means minimal, however when you have it on foot charging downhill, the confidence you have in your footing and traction is incredible. The effect of Salomon's speed-lace system is to me, out of their entire range, best illustrated on this shoe as my mid-foot felt securely placed the entire time. It has comfort enough to wear casually, however i advise against trying to use it on roads as the grip is not designed for the conditions and the sole can jar on bitumen, as with most trail-running shoes. Running in this shoe is a joy and i look forward to testing them further in the Perth Trail Series race this coming weekend.
