My Background

Stuart’s own personal pursuit for adrenalin fuelled adventures began in 2008 on a white water kayaking camp in Dwellingup, Western Australia. Fast forward 7 years through high school adventures and Stuart is currently working as an expedition group leader for the Outdoor Education Group, paddles and writes reviews under the Mainpeak banner in his free time. If I had a dollar for every pack loaded km that I've walked in these then I would have many dollars. These are my shoes of choice for my week in week out camp slog, especially in the warmer months where goretex boots are way too hot. Stiff soled that holds orthotics well and super comfortable. Too heavy and stiff to call a trail runner as such, the XA pro will keep your feet supported and happy for those long, pack laiden days on the track.

I purchased this bag a few months ago and ti has already given me some good use. Lightweight, super comfy to carry and durable this pack is great. Swallows your climbing gear whole for those long walk ins. Only drawback is lack of water bottle pockets, but that's what you get in an alpine pack. haven't used it on any alpine routes yet, but looking forward to putting it to its limits.

The old back backers conundrum: size vs weight. But as the wise mexican girl from the taco ad put it ¿Por qué no tenemos dos. That's right, sweet mexican girl, why can't we have both? Well now you can. I recently switched up my one man tent for this super spacious palace, and I don't regret anything. Weighing only 200g more than my 1 person tent for the comfort, space and versatility of this tent it was a great decision. Just another great example of Exped's gear engineering, making gear light and usable without compromising comfort or space.

I recently converted from my Astral Green Jacket to the Amp, and I'm glad that I did. Not to knock the green jacket, but the amp is next level. Super comfortable rescue vest that you can wear all day without chafing or feeling suffocated, whether you are guiding on grade 1/2 or hucking grade 4/5. Abundant pockets to safely store rescue gear or muesli bars. And the best bit - it makes you look like a bad ass.

I've recently been back in Perth firing up the rivers, both for work and personal missions. This paddle seems to be everywhere over here, and for a good reason. It's a step up from the more basic but heavy duty titan, but still heavy duty enough to scrape down the local run with the weight and feel of a high end AT. Great paddle to have in the inventory as a back up or even your primary.

If you're looking to push your boating and step it up into the steep gnarly world of class 4/5 then this isn't the boat for you (go look at the Mamba or Nomad). However, for a cross over multi day class 2/3 trip this boat is great. Room for the creature comforts yet still handles the mildly confused water of class 3 while still having fun and throwing it around.

So if twist locks are your cup of tea and you're after a reliable, versatile piece of gear then this is your biscuit.

Light, versatile and warm. I love this vest. Works really well in colder weather as part of a layering system or by itself over a base layer on those brisk mornings where a full puffy would be overkill. I take this vest on every program (camp) to keep me warm during the day and to keep my head comfy as a pillow at night. Definitely recommend.

What can I say about this jacket? I think it will be quicker to point out the negatives, as the list of things I love about it far exceeds the negatives. Things that I could nit pick about this jacket: Actually nope, can't think of any... I was umming and ahhring whether to skimp out and get a cheaper jacket or drop a bit more coin for more return. And I'm glad I forked out. This jacket is so comfy, super breathable (I sometimes forget I'm wearing it). And to watch the water bead off is pure joy. Another thing I love about this jacket is it has a zip for every and anything you could possibly think of. I haven't put it through the grulling test of camps week in and week out yet, and it's still pretty shiny and orange but if anything changes my view I will be sure to let you no. Thinking of a new rain jacket? Drop a little more coin and be rewarded for not skimping.

Ah, the old GSI Duk Jug... What can I say about this bottle other than it's truly the outdoor edders best friend. It has everything we need in the field, week in and week out. My two favourite features are as follows: Able to hold hot water without any leaks - useful for anything from your morning cup of coffee through to bringing a hypothermic patient back from the brink (or for those close to freezing nights when you're in a +10ºC sleeping bag). The next best thing is the indent for duct tape - so unbelievably handy. I can think of over a thousand cases where this is more than useful. Once you get this bottle you'll never go back to crappy supermarket plastics. My only hot tip is keep it clean, there's nothing worse than finding a whole community of mould growing in your bottle because you didn't give it a good hot rinse out.

Being a lightweight dry bag, waterproofness to a white water kayaking degree was never it's intentions - this I learnt the hard way (that was an expensive trip...). However, that being said, they are great at separating items in your pack whilst adding another layer of waterproofness, especially in tandem with a sea to summit pack liner. These dry bags are my greatest friend when it comes to getting my packing systems down and in aiding me to find the perfect balance between light and keeping water out for the occasional river crossing or if a student drops my rucksack into the river (happened last week...) Great investment.

Great friend for the alpine adventurers. My favourite feature of this harness is the fact that you can fully unbuckle it and take it off without having to awkwardly step out and tripping yourself up. Bit of a useless feature for the everyday summer time crag, but on those big alpine missions, where you are throwing your harness on and off over your crampons and all your winter gear - not trearing your harness is a pretty big bonus. It's also super comfy. Super comfy, super practical and cheap as chips this harness is the bomb diggity!

Just to reiterate exactly what Simone said, this liner is great for those chilly winter trips where you want to be as warm as possible in your cosy sleeping bag. It also works brilliantly by itself on those warmer trips, however I personally don't like being wrapped up if I'm warm - my feet have to be free! The best use I've found for this liner so far is as a liner to cover your sleeping pad to avoid your sweaty back sticking to your mat whenever you roll over.

Light, warm and super comfy. This jacket is an outdoor edders best friend on those chilly weather programs, either by itself or as part of a layering system (works really well with the Montane Stretch soft shell). Mine is coming up to it's 3rd year of hard use and it is truly holding form, even if it does have several patches from where I have forgotten I was wearing a downy (doesn't take away from the jacket - it just adds character!). In summary, great jacket! Would definitely recommend,

Following Exped's suite this mat is on the more complicated side of the fence, however once you overcome the initial hurdle of inflating this mat will definitely help in keeping you warm through the colder months of your adventures, especially coupled with a good quality Sea to Summit winter bag. There is a saying that one layer of insulation underneath is worth 3 on top, and the Exped Down Mat proves this theory. Developed with the Swiss military in the Swiss Alps, it has some solid evidence to this too! From my experience, here is a summary of what I think of this mat: Pros: Super warm (not too hot in summer either...) Super comfy Packs down pretty well Cons: Slightly heavier mat to add to your already heavy winter pack. Hand pump system takes a long time (but at least you get to practice your CPR) - invest in an Exped Pump dry bag, so worth it! As soon as you get impatient and start using your lungs to inflate the mat it loses warmth efficiency pretty fast as your saliva clumps the down.

Water resistant. Bright. Durable. This torch has it all. In my field of work, if your head torch fails you - then your life will be extremely harder. So knowing that once I pack my BD Storm light I won't have to worry about trying to cook, clean or set my tent up in the dark. This torch has been my savour on paddling trips in which poor planning has lead to a benighted epic. Having a torch that you can wack over your helmet while you paddle the remaining grade 3/4 as the sun rapidly sinks below the horizon is truly a god send. Go diving with it and it will fail you, but have it on your head while you paddle out the flats of a kayak mission or while trying to navigate in the pouring rain and it will be no issue. My only gripe with this torch is how quickly it burns through batteries. So if you are okay with carrying double it's weight in spare batteries then this will serve you well.

Just like all their products, this tent is brilliantly complicated until you decide to read the instructions (men struggle with this...) and it all becomes brilliantly simple and all the complications suddenly become clear why they do it the way the do it. This tent is my best friend out in the field; when night time is my time of piece and quiet away from the nagging demands of the students. It has everything I need for my own little temple of zen: plenty of head room so you don't feel like you're going to break your neck by bending in two and more than spacious inside allowing you to fully set up all your little systems that make you feel under control (or maybe it's just my OCD...) When the weather comes in (as it always does in the rainy highlands) the Aries makes you feel like you're in a fortress - even against the winds that are threatening to rip your place of peace in two. If you are contemplating getting this tent - go and get it. It's brilliant.
