Race Report:
The conditions were near perfect for most paddlers with south south-westerly winds brewing for a late morning charge down the coast. After a descriptive briefing by Race Organiser Jesse Phillips the start was left up to Dave Hunt heading the Water Safety Crews in the tranquil Mosman Bay. On the line were around 300 paddlers revving their engines for the 17km race ahead. As paddlers passed the first 1km to Chidley Point they headed into a fresh breeze buffeting into the fronts of their boats, knowing full well that after they attacked the challenging freo harbour the "doctor" would help them home to Cottesloe Beach.
First to round the pylon was the "Godfather" Brendan Sarson in a fantastic effort, stopping the clock at 1 hour 14 minutes and 27 seconds, a clearance of 80 seconds from his nearest rival the illustrious Dan Humble. Dan Humble was chased in by ocean champion Dean Beament for 3rd, followed by WAIS dynamo paddler Dan Bowker in 4th, and Australian Slalom come ocean extraordinaire John Wilkie. The strength of womens paddling is showing good signs of improvement with Hong Kong Dragon Race 2nd place getter Ruth Highman taking line honours (taking her WA series win ratio to 3 from 3) ahead of Jessica Watkins and Libby LeCoultre.
The remaining paddlers flooded in with some great performances by all, especially the not so experienced paddlers in the field who handled the conditions really well. As the field entered the beach the on-shore conditions dealt many a rough ride. The help of volunteers at the shoreline helped minimise any potential damage to craft. The sand was soon filled with skis and kayaks of all colours and shapes.
The presentations were a little late (sorry) but we got them underway and finished by 1:30pm to complete the event proceedings. A big thanks to all paddlers who stayed to enjoy the hospice of the Cottesloe SLSC Courtyard and the food provided for all competitors. Next year we will be trying to get you out of the sun to keep you there a little longer!
Our Water Safety crews were fantastic on the day and i hope all paddlers appreciate the support they provide to the field.
Big thanks to Mainpeak Paddlesports , Shotz Sports Nutrition , Invisible Zinc , Healthway and the Heart Foundation promoting the Be Active message , and the Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club.
Please be aware of the upcoming events on the Canoeing WA Calendar.
